Holiday Fitness: Thanksgiving week

Earn It, Enjoy It — How to Indulge Without Derailing

Thanksgiving week is here — and if we’re being honest, this is the time when most people start stressing about food, falling off their routines, and convincing themselves that one holiday meal is going to ruin their progress. We need to learn that the key to Holiday Fitness is Balance.

Let’s get something straight right now:
You are allowed to enjoy Thanksgiving — fully, joyfully, and without guilt.

Fitness is not punishment.
Food is not a crime scene.
And one holiday isn’t going to undo all the work you’ve put in.

The real danger isn’t Thanksgiving Day — it’s what happens before and after when routines collapse, we stop moving, and we tell ourselves “I’ll start again in January.”

Not here. Not this year.

Balance Doesn’t Mean Restriction — It Means Intention.

There are two ways people usually approach Thanksgiving:

  1. They “give up” completely — eat like it’s a competitive sport and don’t come up for air until Monday.
  2. They panic — dry turkey, no pie, miserable, resentful, and still end up overeating later.

Neither is healthy.

There is a third option — the one we practice here:

Earn it with movement
Enjoy it without guilt
Return to structure afterward

Not punishment.
Just balance.

Move Because It Feels Good

One of my greatest joys every Thanksgiving isn’t just the meal — it’s the movement around it.

Some years I’ll jump into a 5K Turkey Trot.
Other years, a morning hike.
And at the very least — while everyone else is napping off the food coma — I round up the dogs (and whoever else wants in) and we walk:

➡️ 30 minutes out
➡️ 30 minutes back

No intensity required.
No stopwatch.
Just fresh air, conversation, and the kind of clarity that reminds you you’re alive.

We come home with:
✅ Stomachs settled
✅ Heads cleared
✅ Spirits lifted

Just in time for pie.

That’s balance.

How to Enjoy Thanksgiving Without Derailing

Here’s the simple strategy:

1️⃣ Eat normally before the meal
Don’t “save up.”
That backfires every time.

2️⃣ Build your plate with intention
Protein first.
Veggies next.
Pick the carbs and treats you truly want — not the ones you eat just because they’re there.

3️⃣ Move at some point
Walk, trot, hike, stretch — whatever fits the day.
Not to burn calories, but to feel good.

4️⃣ Get right back on track Friday
One meal doesn’t derail progress.
Four days of leftovers and excuses will.

Consistency is not destroyed by Thanksgiving — it’s destroyed by the story you tell yourself afterward.

Let This Be the Year You Enjoy Both

You don’t have to choose between:
❌ enjoying the holiday
and
❌ being healthy

You can have both — joy and discipline, celebration and consistency.

This week, earn it with movement.
Enjoy it with gratitude.
Then step right back into your routine like the strong, capable, committed human you are.
